06/ Charity Support
In 2003 the Flow AI Managing Director took on the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro with his father, uncle and a family friend, Jim Lumberg. After successfully reaching the mountain summit, the Guide who supported the expedition invited them to visit the school where his wife worked. When they visited they were shocked at the condition of the school. The school had only three walls and an old rusty roof, with about thirty children sitting on wooden benches, with no pens, pencils, books or other teaching aids.
When they left Simon’s father and Jim discussed the situation considering how they could help. Initially the plan was to raise some money for some land and a school building, however this subsequently developed into a larger project, forming the Kilimanjaro Children’s Foundation.
Today the school is situated on land owned in the KCF charitable trust, with a small walled complex containing purpose built class rooms and a kitchen. The fund raising has also extended to employ a head teacher, teachers, and a cook.
The school offers education to about 300 children from very poor families. On a daily basis the children are given two meals, a uniform and receive some fundamental medical support. The school also does outreach to the local community, supporting the families of the children that attend.
Flow AI is proud to have the Kilimanjaro Children’s Foundation as the official company charity. With ongoing charitable events to support the school – Kilimanjarokids.org
